WMA Announces Light Cycle Recipient of Commission Grant

German-born conceptual artist Catrine VAL was selected by an international jury as this year’s WMA Commission recipient of the HK$250,000 grant. 

The five-member selection panel of jurors comprises of John STANMEYER, photojournalist and educator; Dr. Linda Chiu-han LAI, Associate Professor, School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong; Jacqueline FRANCIS, Associate Professor and Chair of the Graduate Program, Visual and Critical Studies, California College of the Arts in San Francisco; Melissa Karmen LEE, public art curator and consultant; and Teresa MA, WYNG Foundation Trustee.  They see great potential in the selected photographic project proposal - Manifesto, which willl explore the notion of light in Hong Kong from a feminist perspective. The production of Manifesto will be unfolded soon and the completed work will be entered into the WMA Collection.

WMA looks forward to working with Catrine VAL on her project and fostering dialogues and exchanges with WMA Masters finalists, who are exploring this cycle’s theme of Light through different lenses. Together, these works will provide multiple dimensions to the discussion of Hong Kong at this important time. 

About Catrine VAL

Catrine VAL is a German conceptual artist, working in the field of photography, film and performance. VAL started as a commercial artist in the advertising industry in Vienna and completed her B.A. at Kunsthochschule Kassel in Germany and her post-graduate studies at Kunsthochschule für Medien in Cologne. She worked for 6 years as an assistant lecturer to Bjørn Melhus at Kunsthochschule Kassel. With the  interest in the concepts of time and history, she focuses on the role of women existing in the diverse cultural and political systems, while she works extensively in popular etymology. VAL has collaborated with women in India, South America, Asia and Europe.
