WMA Masters 2016/17—“Mobility” Exhibition of Finalists’ Works

From 14 April to 6 May, the WYNG Media Award (WMA) Masters will be featuring the photographic works of finalists that highlight the issue of “Mobility” in Hong Kong at the Comix Home Base on 3/F and 4/F. The artists exhibiting include Weilun CHONG, Billy H.C. KWOK, LAM Yik Fei, LEE Wing Ki, Wei Leng TAY and Kurt TONG. The winning series will be announced at the opening of the exhibition.

The six finalists are (listed in no particular order):

Weilun CHONG – “Please Mind the Gap”

Billy H.C. KWOK – “From Transit to New Lives”

LAM Yik Fei – “Along the Hong Kong Border”

LEE Wing Ki – “Tsang’s Odyssey”

Wei Leng TAY – “The Other Shore”

Kurt TONG – “Threads of Sisterhood”

The exhibition will be accompanied by a series of on-site activities, including a seminar on “The art and relevance of the photo book”, “Moving between the Gaps in Wan Chai—A Wheelchair Experience Photography Workshop”, access tours, the “WMA x ifva present: an outdoor short film screening”, “School Bus Ride with the Family” and public guided tours.

Every June, the WMA Masters invites photography-based submissions from both international and Hong Kong artists. These submissions should be about Hong Kong and relevant to the specific theme selected by the organisers of the annual WMA Masters. The winner will be chosen by an international panel of judges and the works of all finalists will be exhibited. Past themes included “Poverty,” “Waste,” “Air,” and “Identity”. The WMA Masters’ international panel of judges comprises industry leaders in photography, art, publishing, and the non-profit sector. They include Zoher Abdoolcarim, MaryAnn Camilleri, Abby Chen, Anthony Po-shan Leung, Christopher Phillips, Kevin W.Y. Lee and Paul Zimmerman.

A full-colour catalogue will be published to complement the exhibition. The winner of the WMA Masters will receive a cash award of HK$250,000. Each of the other five finalists will receive HK$15,000. The exhibition will be curated by Hong Kong-based C&G Artpartment. 

This year’s supporting organisation is the Arts with the Disabled Association Hong Kong.

The WMA Masters theme for 2017/18 is “Transition”.
