Queer Reads Library @ WMA

As a response to the WOMEN: from Her to Here Hong Kong iteration, WMA will transform into an “incubation space” for the project Fill in the Blanks: Queer Print Culture in Hong Kong during Pride Month 2022. LGBTQ+ collective Queer Reads Library will activate the space in June and July by revisiting their collections and researching archival materials from the 80s to the contemporary, produced and published by local LGBTQ+ publishers, artists and organisers, and further initiating dialogues with queer communities. These research materials include periodicals, books, magazines, publicities and news clippings from independent publishers and NGOs, and touch upon community-building, identity, advocacy, arts and culture, and lifestyle dating back to 1980s Hong Kong. Fill in the Blanks is an invitation to LGBTQ+ communities to illuminate lesser-known queer histories of Hong Kong.

About Queer Reads Library
Queer Reads Library (QRL) is a collection of books and independently published zines centred around queer narratives and themes. As a response to the censorship of ten LGBTQ-themed books for children and young adults in Hong Kong’s public libraries in June 2018, the Library brings together a selection of ‘queer reads’ for members of the public to engage with. In the spirit of openness and dialogue, Queer Reads Library serves as a testament to queer friends living in all societies, who still share their images and stories amidst dangerously increasing tides of transphobia and homophobia. Established in 2018, QRL is a collaboration between artist-curator Kaitlin Chan, artist-writer Rachel Lau and artist-publisher Beatrix Pang.
