WYNG Masters Award 2014/15 – IDENTITY and Winner Announcement

From 10 to 19 April, the photographic works of this year’s WYNG Masters Award finalists can be viewed by the public at the Exhibition Gallery of the Hong Kong Central Library. The artists will bring their interpretation of IDENTITY to life through images. The winner of this year’s WYNG Masters Award and WMA Commission were announced on April 9th, one day before the finalist exhibition is opened to the public.

The WYNG Masters Award Exhibition kicked off with the Dr. York Chow as Guest of Honor stating that “A civic and progressive society is one that would care for everyone, including those who are unfortunate, disadvantaged, and lack of opportunities. Hong Kong has the wealth, the infrastructure and the culture to be a great society because of our history, our heritage, our tradition and our culture. Let us put them into good use, for today and for our future generation.”

WYNG Masters Award winner and finalists

A panel of renowned industry leaders in photography, art, publishing, and non-profit including Zoher Abdoolcarim, MaryAnn Camilleri, Abby Chen, Louise Clements, Frank Kalero, Leung Po Shan Anthony and Margaret Ng, picked out this year’s winning works. The WYNG Masters Award winner is Siu Wai Hang (InsideOutland).  According to Zoher Abdoolcarim, “All the six finalists are strong on the power of their photography and on the diversity of identity. But the winner had the edge on several fronts. The work is multi-layered with a clear connective tissue. It seamlessly fuses the past with the present to tell a moving story. It addresses, with subtlety and nuance, what is now a compelling, and compulsive, issue for Hong Kong: its place—and identity—within China. At some level or other, all of us can empathize with it.”

The other five finalists whose works are also exhibited include:

• Johnny Gin – The Architecture of Insurgency
• Remmus Ha – 7 “I”s
• Leung Chi Wo + Sara Wong – He was lost yesterday and we found him today
• Dinu Li – The Mother of All Journeys
• Emmanuel Serna – No Life
