The WMA Masters seeks to foster the growth of photography as an art form in Hong Kong, as well as to spark dialogue and nurture awareness on social issues in the city. Each year, a theme is chosen for the award. In the inaugural 2012/13 cycle, the theme was “Poverty”. This was followed by “Waste”, “Air”, and “Identity”. This year’s theme is “Mobility”, and the theme for the 2017/18 cycle is “Transition”.
 
The WMA Masters’ international panel of judges comprises industry leaders in photography, art, publishing, and the non-profit sector. They include Zoher Abdoolcarim, MaryAnn Camilleri, Abby Chen, Anthony Po-shan Leung, Christopher Phillips, Kevin W.Y. Lee and Paul Zimmerman. The winner of the award will be announced at the opening of the exhibition.
 
The exhibition featuring finalists for the theme, “Mobility”, will be held at Comix Home Base from 14 April to 6 May 2017. The WMA Masters will also host a series of public programs during the exhibition period. The exhibition will be curated by the Hong Kong-based C&G Artpartment.

Singapore-based Kevin WY Lee and Hong Kong publisher Chung Cheuk-ning discuss photo book publishing to show the audience how photo books are made in different cities. Tang Kuok Hou, an artist from Macau would join this interesting discussion as well.

09:30 - 12:30 Moving between the Gaps in Wanchai - A Wheelchair Experience Photography Workshop  

To complement the theme of the 2017 WMA Masters, “Mobility”, ADA Angel Kevin Cheng from the Art with the Disabled Association Hong Kong will be leading participants on a journey in wheelchairs. Participants will take photographs from their wheelchairs, experience the day-to-day limitations faced by wheelchair users, and see Wan Chai from a different angle.

19:30 - 21:30 WMA x ifva - Mobility Short Films Outdoor Screening  

“Mobility” is not limited to physical movement: the term can also refer to social mobility. To show broader interpretations of “mobility”, the ifva has selected three short films that depict the expectations and desires of Hongkongers, the struggles of migrant workers and stories on growing up in underprivileged families.

Co-organised by the WMA and Good Day Wan Chai, the “School Bus Ride with the Family” programme includes an eco-friendly parent-child workshop and an educational tour by Walk in Hong Kong introducing the history behind the district’s century-old institutions and landmarks.
